
The only woman on federal death row asked President Donald Trump on Tuesday for clemency to stop her pending execution.
Lisa Montgomery, 52, was convicted of killing 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett in the northwest Missouri town of Skidmore in December 2004.
She is scheduled to be executed in Indiana on Jan. 12.
Tuesday’s filing came after a court-supported delay allowing time for her Tennessee-based attorneys to prepare the petition after they caught COVID-19 while working on her defense.
Federal public defenders based in Nashville — Kelley Henry and Amy Harwell — lead Montgomery’s current defense team due to their experience with capital cases. The pair each suffered severe cases of the coronavirus after visiting Montgomery in the Texas prison where she remains on suicide watch. Continue
