Citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, who reported stories related to COVID-19 from Wuhan starting in February 2020, has been detained and charged with “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”. Zhang Zhan went missing on 15 May in Wuhan and was subsequently revealed to have been detained by police in Shanghai, more than 640km away.

Zhang Zhan, 37, was sentenced on 28th December to four years in prison by a Shanghai court on the charge of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” for reporting live from the city of Wuhan during the Covid-19 outbreak in February. Zhang Zhan was arrested in May and has since been protesting by going on a hunger strike for which she has been force-fed through a nasal tube. In January she decided to minimize her hunger strike, but her health is still in very bad condition.
