
Mümtaz’er Türköne, a political scientist and a columnist for now-closed Zaman daily, has been pictured in handcuffs as he was going through a medical check-up at an İstanbul hospital.
According to the Jailed Journos Twitter account, Türköne was forced to remain in handcuffs for hours while he was waiting for his turn at the hospital.
Social media users reacted to the “inhuman and degrading treatment” of the 63-year-old purge-victim academic.
The İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court on July 6 sentenced Zaman journalists Türköne and Mustafa Ünal 10 years, six months in prison, while İbrahim Karayeğen was given nine years, and Ahmet Turan Alkan, Şahin Alpay and Ali Bulaç were handed down sentences of eight years, nine months each. The court also decided to release Alkan and Karayeğen pending appeal. Türköne and Ünal are still incarcerated. Continue
