Shpresa Loshaj is a Kosovar activist living in Canada. Her battle to defend the environment began in 2018: returning to her home region, the Deçan Valley, Shpresa discovered that the entire territory had been disrupted by the construction of several hydroelectric power plants by the Austrian company Kelag. Her research uncovered under-the-table agreements between Kelag and Kosovar local and national governments, which allowed the company to build the power plants without the necessary permits required by environmental laws.In February 2021, Kelag sued her for defamation, asking for a compensation of 100 thousand euros: an attempt to stop the protests and silence Shpresa — a tactic already used by the company in the past with other activists. But Shpresa did not lower her voice. With the movement she founded, Pishtarët (Albanian for “torch”), she is still pursuing her struggle.

Le sue ricerche hanno portato alla luce gli accordi sottobanco tra la Kelag e i poteri locali e nazionali kosovari, che hanno consentito all’azienda di costruire le centrali senza i necessari permessi previsti dalle leggi ambientali. Nel febbraio 2021 la Kelag le ha fatto causa per diffamazione, chiedendo un risarcimento di 100.000 euro: un tentativo di fermare le proteste e zittire Shpresa, una tattica già usata dall’azienda in passato con altri attivisti. Ma Shpresa non ha abbassato la voce. Con il movimento da lei fondato, Pishtarët (“torcia” in albanese), continua la sua lotta.
