My Portrait of Cartoonist Ashraf Omar on Egyptian Journalists’ Solidarity Day

My portrait of the cartoonist Ashraf Omar during the solidarity day organized by the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate, proud to participate even from afar.

Ashraf Omar’s wife said an important phrase:
“Those who are imprisoned are not imprisoned alone; their family is imprisoned with them. The strange thing is that the cartoon for which he was imprisoned has not been imprisoned and has become famous all over the world.”

The “Committee for Freedoms” of the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate organized a solidarity day for fellow imprisoned journalists. The event was held on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the Mohamed Hassanein Heikal hall. During the day, a press conference was held to present the latest updates on the recent arrests of journalists and the conditions of imprisoned journalists.

The day concluded with a symbolic sit-in at the syndicate’s headquarters for two hours, in solidarity with fellow journalists, with the presence of numerous volunteer lawyers defending journalists and prisoners of conscience. This event took place against the backdrop of the recent increase in journalist arrests, which involved colleagues Yasser Abu Al-Ala and his wife, Khaled Mamdouh, and more recently the cartoonist Ashraf Omar, for whom a detention order was just issued by the State Security Prosecution.
