2024 has been an incredible year for books, and among all genres, celebrity memoirs truly shined. Icons like Cher, Al Pacino, and Jon M. Chu shared their stories with the world. And this year, for the first time, there’s even a graphic memoir on the list of the best of the year: the one by Ai Weiwei, a project I had the honor of collaborating on.
Ai Weiwei tells his life, his family, and his career through the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac, blending personal memory and mythology. This work is not only a sequel to his prose memoir 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows, but it goes beyond just autobiographical narrative.
🖋️ As Ai Weiwei himself says:
“I don’t consider it a memoir. The idea was to gather memories like a timeline and offer them alongside mystical stories from China’s past. It’s a mix of memory and mythology, a story that can interest anyone, far beyond my own personal experience.”
I’m proud to have worked with Ai Weiwei on this project, which blends art, memory, and culture. This book is a testament to the power of the graphic novel as an expressive medium, capable of telling universal stories with a unique visual impact.
