Peace? Ok…

On April 26, 2025, just before the funeral of Pope Francis, an unexpected but highly symbolic meeting took place between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The 15-minute discussion occurred under the basilica’s columns, surrounded by cardinals and dignitaries, creating a moment of great intensity and significance.

During the meeting, Zelensky urged Trump to apply more pressure on Vladimir Putin and prioritize an unconditional ceasefire in peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Trump responded by emphasizing the need for a diplomatic agreement with Russia, highlighting Moscow’s military strength and the superiority of the U.S. armed forces. He also called on Putin to halt hostilities and sign a peace agreement.

Both leaders described the meeting as “very productive.” Zelensky noted that it could become historic if it led to tangible results, while Trump saw the agreement on mineral resources as an attempt to halt what he termed “Biden’s war” in Ukraine.

On the same day as the meeting, the U.S. and Ukraine signed an economic agreement ensuring U.S. access to vital Ukrainian mineral resources, such as lithium, titanium, and other rare metals. This agreement also established a U.S.-Ukraine Reconstruction Fund to finance post-war rebuilding efforts in Ukraine and ensure that entities supporting Russian military actions would not benefit.

The images of the meeting, showing the two presidents sitting side by side in a solemn atmosphere, went viral, symbolizing a moment of dialogue and hope amid conflict. These photographs were widely shared and commented on by international media.

In summary, the meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the Vatican represents a significant step toward a possible de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, with the hope that dialogue and diplomacy may prevail over hostilities.
