In East Turkistan, also known as Xinjiang, Uyghur poets and other writers and intellectuals have disappeared into detention camps along with thousands of other Turkic speaking citizens. To mark the 100th anniversary of Pen International, an organisation that stands up for imprisoned writers and freedom of speech, we hear the work of Uyghur poets, Perhat Tursun, Fatimah Abdulghufur, Tahir Hamut and Abduqadir Jalalidin, interwoven with the stories of Uyghur Australian citizens whose relatives have disappeared in Xinjiang. We also visit a Uyghur language school in Adelaide, where Uyghur poetry plays a role in keeping the language alive. Podcast
