SOS Mediterranee 2023 Report

This page is available in English (UK) , Italian

The annual report on SOS MEDITERRANEE’s activities for 2023 has been published: it provides a detailed account, with figures and data, of everything that happened last year aboard the Ocean Viking, thanks to the efforts of the SOS MEDITERRANEE team.

“2023 was the deadliest year in the Central Mediterranean since 2017, with at least 2,476 people losing their lives during the crossing, and the Cutro and Pylos shipwrecks marking one of the darkest moments for those working to save lives at sea,” said Valeria Taurino, General Director of SOS MEDITERRANEE Italy. “However, in the face of attempts by European governments to close humanitarian space in the Mediterranean, we are heartened by the strong mobilization of civil society and all those who choose every day to stand with those who save lives. Thanks to their support, we can continue our mission of rescue, protection, and testimony.”

The Possible Life: Gianluca Costantini’s “Traveling Exhibition”

During the first mission of 2023, the Ocean Viking hosted the artwork from “The Possible Life,” a “civil drawing” exhibition created by illustrator and activist Gianluca Costantini, internationally renowned for his political and civil commitment through comics.

“The Possible Life” brings together some of his most notable works, focused on the themes of migration and integration, along with new drawings on the subject of sea rescue, specifically inspired by the Ocean Viking.

Once the mission was completed, the exhibition was donated to SOS MEDITERRANEE, which has used it on numerous occasions in various Italian cities to spread messages of respect for life and human dignity, values shared by both the association and the illustrator.
