The comic I created for Artribune is an in-depth exploration of Zodiac, focusing on He Youzhi, a Chinese illustrator who had a profound impact on my work. It was Ai Weiwei who introduced me to his art and encouraged me to study it.
His line—sharp, dry, and powerful—shaped my drawing style in a way I had never experienced before. He Youzhi was an artist who challenged the conventions of his time, offering a reflection of Chinese society in all its complexity.
Although I never had the chance to meet him, I consider his influence a form of teaching, which found its way into my approach to Zodiac.
This comic is my tribute to his art and an exploration of how artistic traditions can transcend time, shaping even those who have never met their masters in person.
