Giving Voice to the Silenced: Remembering Eritrea’s 2001 Victims in Bologna

Through drawings, we honor journalists, reformers, and citizens who disappeared, demanding freedom, justice, and truth 24 years later.
On September 18, in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, during the vigil in memory of the 2001 victims, the activists hold my drawings in their hands.

Twenty-four years have passed since that night when Eritrea made journalists, reformist ministers, religious figures, and citizens disappear—people who had the courage to demand freedom and justice. Since then: no trial, no news, only silence.

With my lines I want to bring those voices back into the public space: the voices of the journalists imprisoned for telling the truth, those of the politicians and religious figures who vanished for demanding reforms, and that of an entire people whose voice was taken away.

Drawing, on this anniversary, is a way not to give in to silence. It is an act to continue demanding freedom, justice, and truth.
