Between comics, music, and political memory

A creator moving across languages, generations, and contemporary imaginaries

Davide Toffolo is one of the most original and hybrid figures in contemporary Italian culture: a graphic novelist, illustrator, musician, and performer capable of moving across different languages while maintaining a strong poetic and political coherence. Born in Pordenone in 1965 and deeply rooted in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, he has built an artistic path that combines autobiography, historical research, and a continuous reflection on the relationship between image, memory, life, and death.

As a comics author, Davide Toffolo has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in Italian graphic storytelling. His drawing style—essential yet visionary—moves between personal narrative and the “transfigured” biography of historical and cultural figures, often linked to marginality or political tension. In this sense, works such as Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. Rivoluzione Permanente fit perfectly into his poetics: not simple biographies, but explorations of myth, revolution, and the construction of collective memory. Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. At the same time, Toffolo is also the frontman of Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, one of the most influential bands in Italy’s independent music scene. The group, born in Pordenone, has developed a unique visual and symbolic universe made of masks, hidden identities, and an aesthetic suspended between irony and unease. In Toffolo’s work, music and drawing are never separate: they constantly feed into each other, forming a single narrative ecosystem.

This dual identity will be at the center of an upcoming event in New York organized by Spaghetti Punk, in collaboration with NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, Ragusa Foundation, Salotto, and Rizzoli Bookstore. The conversation will take place at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò in New York, where Toffolo will be in dialogue with music journalist Ricky Russo.

The talk, titled Pasolini, Pordenone, and the Spectacle of Life & Death, will explore the connection between Toffolo’s work and the legacy of Pier Paolo Pasolini, one of the most important intellectuals of 20th-century Italy. Pier Paolo Pasolini remains a key reference in Toffolo’s imagination: his ability to read social bodies, peripheries, the violence of modern transformation, and the sacredness of marginality runs through both his comics and his musical work.

Toffolo’s engagement with Pasolini is not only thematic but also formal, as seen in his graphic exploration of Pasolini’s life and thought and in his broader interest in blending drawing and performance. The Brooklyn event continues this trajectory, creating a space where biography, history, and artistic interpretation intersect.

The New York program will conclude on May 28 with a live performance by Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti at Arlene’s Grocery, extending the artistic dialogue from the page to the stage.

Across these crossings between Friuli and New York, comics and music, memory and performance, Toffolo’s work confirms its deepest nature: a hybrid narrative device where different artistic forms become tools to question reality without simplifying it.
